Mon-Aé Guest House (Built in 1906)
A unique overnight experience!
The Mon-Aé Guest House is situated in the historic small town of
Volksrust at the foot of the well-known "Mountain of the doves", Amajuba.
Surrounded by mountains, rolling green hills and clear blue skies, the
crisp clean air lends it a perfect place for the weary soul to breath.
Centrally located, the Mon-Aé Guest House is within walking distance
from the primary school, high school, shops and churches. It is on the
Kwazulu Natal border, and near the Free State border. Majuba power
station is 35km away. Newcastle, with modern shopping facilities,
cinemas and an excellent private hospital is 55km away via Laingsnek
pass. Wakkerstroom, boasting with one of the most unique wetlands with
breathtaking bird watching, is 10 minutes away on route to Sodwana and
St Lucia.
This beautiful old house, full of character, has the original oregan
pine floors, wooden window frames and doors, steel ceilings, marble
fireplaces and antique baths in some of the rooms. In the 1940’s Sister
van Tonder, a well-known midwife lived here and delivered many babies in
the house.

Historic interest
• Battle of Majuba (February 1881) - Boers drove Gen. Colley and his men
off the
mountain, forcing the British to negotiate peace.
• O'Neill's cottage - makeshift hospital for British soldiers.
• Battle of Allemansnek (10 June 1900)- British forces broke through
into Transvaal
• Memorials: British soldier's, concentration camp.
• Private museum on nearby farm.
